Engagement Ring Selection Guide

The Xemplare Engagement Ring Diamond Guide

A brilliant beginning, guided by clarity and care.

Choosing a diamond for an engagement ring is a moment of significance—equal parts emotion and intention. Whether you're planning a surprise proposal or selecting the ring together, understanding a few key principles will help you choose a diamond that captures the essence of your love story.

Here’s what matters most:

1. The 4Cs – Your Foundation of Confidence

These are the core criteria used to evaluate every diamond’s quality:

Cut
Often the most important C, the cut determines how brilliantly the diamond reflects light. Prioritise a well-cut stone—it’s what gives a diamond its iconic sparkle.

Color
Diamonds are graded from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow or brown). Colourless diamonds are rare, but near-colourless stones (G–H range) often offer the best balance of beauty and value.

Clarity
Clarity refers to natural marks inside or on the diamond. Most are microscopic and don’t affect beauty. VS (Very Slightly Included) or SI (Slightly Included) clarity grades typically offer eye-clean brilliance at a sensible price.

Carat Weight
Carat measures weight, not size. Bigger isn’t always better—a smaller diamond with exceptional cut and proportions can dazzle more than a larger one with less precision.

2. Shape – A Reflection of Her Style

The diamond’s shape is deeply personal.

Round Brilliant: Classic and timeless

Oval & Pear: Elegant and elongating

Princess & Cushion: Contemporary with soft edges

Emerald & Asscher: Sophisticated with vintage appeal

Choose a shape that suits her personality—and her hand.

3. Setting & Finger Proportion – The Finishing Touches

The setting frames the diamond and defines the ring’s overall style. Consider how it complements both the stone and her lifestyle. Solitaire, halo, pavé, bezel—each has its own character and presence.

Also, consider her finger size. A delicate hand may shine with a more modest carat weight, while a bold setting may balance beautifully on a larger finger.

4. Budget – Start With What Feels Right

There’s no “rule” for how much to spend. Instead, set a thoughtful budget that works for you—and focus on what makes the diamond beautiful to your eyes. With the right priorities, you can find a stunning ring at any price point.

5. Trust Matters – Choose With Confidence

Certification: Always choose a diamond certified by a respected gem lab like GIA or AGS.

Jeweller: Work with someone who offers transparency, education, and experience.

See Before You Buy: Whenever possible, view the diamond in person or through high-quality images and video.
